Welcome to the Summer Term at Burnhope Primary School!
This newsletter is to inform you of all the enriching learning opportunities and fun we will have this term.
During this term, we will be continuing to improve our reading and spelling skills by using the Read, Write Inc. program. All children will bring home spellings on a daily basis, please help them to learn these.
In lessons, we will be reading books such as Skellig by David Almond and The Eighteenth Emergency by Betsy Byers.
We use the method of Talk for Writing where children are given time to memorise a short bit of text and its features before composing a similar text of their own. We will also write information texts, journalistic writing and instruction as part of our non-fiction units.
Pupils are expected to read five times a week and have their reading diaries signed by an adult.
There are many incentives (reading raffle and treasure map) for those who read regularly.
In the first part of the half term, we will cover fractions, decimals and percentage. We will learn how to: split a whole into fractions; find fractions of a number; find fraction, decimal and percentage equivalents and a read a number with up to three decimal places.
In the second half of the term, we will cover time, statistics and geometry. These lessons are delivered in a fun and engaging way and include problem solving which gives pupils an opportunity to apply their skills.
Homework will be given out on a Friday to be completed and returned the following Tuesday. Please keep a watch on Class Dojo for homework reminders.
In Science, our topic for the first half term is ‘Properties and changes of materials’.
The children will learn about different materials, their uses and their properties, as well as dissolving, separating mixtures and irreversible changes. They will sort and classify objects according to their properties and will explore the properties of materials to find the most suitable material for different purposes.
In the second half of the summer term, we will ask ‘Which wild animals and plants thrive in our locality?’. Children will explore, identify and name a variety of living things (plants and animals) in the local and wider environment and group them. They will also recognise that environments can change and can pose dangers.
In the first half of the summer term, our question will be: ‘Who were the Mayans an
Geographyd what have we learnt from them?’. The children will discover the ancient Maya civilisation; who the ancient Maya people were and where and when they lived. They will use maps and atlases to locate Maya cities and identify countries in Mesoamerica. In addition to this, they will learn about the rituals of the ancient Maya people.
During the second half of the term, in Geography, we will be asking: ‘What’s so special about the USA?’. We will be locating the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe and North America and concentrate on their environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and major cities.
In Digital literacy, we will be using Kodu in Computer Science. In Digital Literacy, we will explore stereotypes, and how to be a super digital citizen. Finally, in IT we will research and present information and create databases and spreadsheets.
Our PHSE topic is ‘Relationships’, children will have opportunity for exploration of feelings within the context of our important relationships including family and friends. The theme aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy.
In RE lessons, we will continue to understand Christianity with the question ‘What can we learn about Christian faith through studying the lives of northern saints?’. They will research information about the Northern saints and what makes a saint special.
In the second half of the term, we will discover key aspects of the environment and will focus on the question ‘Why should people with religious faith care about the environment?’ The children will work creatively to enhance their learning experience.
In PE, our topic is athletics. We will continue to train with Anthony, a coach from the Stadium of Light.
We have P.E. on a Monday afternoon.
