Transition

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,

Mrs Adamson – Head Teacher

It’s been a long time since we closed our gates to the majority of pupils on March 20th. Whilst school has remained open for vulnerable and key worker children throughout this time we have more recently opened for pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. Following the recent government announcement that it would like schools to re-open for all pupils from September, we have been working on the arrangements to allow all of Burnhope Primary’s pupils to return safely.  We have followed the government’s guidance very closely and feel we are now able to share the arrangements below to help you understand what school will be like in September. Therefore, unless advised otherwise by the government, DfE or Durham Local Authority, from Wednesday 2nd September we will be fully open to all year groups.

We are absolutely delighted that as we head into the new academic year we will able to open our doors again and welcome back children in all year groups. To help support the children transitioning into school or moving classes we have created these pages on our website to let you know how we will be organising our school so that we can welcome everyone back safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does your school have a uniform?

Yes, we strongly encourage the children to wear a uniform to school – full details can be found in the uniform section of our website.

What will my child need to bring?
  • Named water bottle
  • Spare underwear in case of toileting accidents
  • PE kit – see uniform section
  • Names on and in EVERYTHING that comes into school
  • Sun hat, sun cream applied before school, raincoat or coat – depending on the weather
Is my child entitled to free milk at school?

Free school milk is available to all school children under the age of five, provided by Cool Milk. You will receive a form in your new starter pack giving you the option to take up the offer if you would like to.  Shortly before your child's fifth birthday, you will be offered a subsidised rate to continue receiving milk.

What about lunch at school?

A school meal is available for all children who stay for a full day. Menus are on a 3 week rotational basis - a paper copy is available from the office.

Alternatively, children are welcome to bring their own packed lunch  for guidance on what should be in a packed lunch for school please refer to our Current Packed Lunch Letter . Should your child wish to change from school meals to packed lunch or vice versa we require a minimum of one weeks notice.

Do I need to apply for Free School Meals?
  • In short, the answer is YES.
  • All pupils are entitled to a free school lunch in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. This is a government-funded scheme called Universal Free School Meals. It is not income dependent and the school does not receive any additional funding for those pupils.
  • Some pupil may ALSO be eligible for Disadvantaged (or Benefits-Related) Free School Meals. This is income and benefit dependent and it means the school receives additional funding to support those pupils for the next six years of their school career.
  • Many parents/carers do not apply for Free School Meals because their child will receive a free school lunch anyway. I cannot stress enough how important it is that you apply. It takes a matter of minutes and is very simple. The funding is there to accelerate and promote pupil outcomes and diminish the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers but we can only access it if you fill in the form.
  • You can submit a Free School Meal Application Form at any time during your child's time in school. It is especially important to do so if there is a change in your employment or financial circumstances
  • A form is included in the New Starters Pack
How will I be kept informed about school events?
  • At Burnhope Primary we keep parents updated using Class Dojo. This can be downloaded as an app or accessed via the website.  School newsletters will be posted on here
  • We need an up to date mobile number and email address so we can send text messages about important events.
  • Visit our school website to view the school diary and the latest newsletters.
What should I do if my child is ill?
  • Telephone the school office on the first day of absence before 9:00am on 01207 520 243. You will be able to leave a message at any time by selecting Option 1.
  • If the illness is ongoing, keep us informed regularly.
  • If your child has vomited or has had diarrhoea, they should not return to school until 48 hours have passed after the last occasion of illness.
How do I pay for educational visits and school meals?

We operate a cashless office. All parents / carers must pay via ParentPay to pay for all items. The office will issue you a code and can help you to set this up.

My child needs to take some medicine during the school day. What should I do?

Occasionally, staff are able to give medicines.  It is necessary for you to complete a form (available in the office) authorising this.

My child has asthma, what do I need to do?

Please record this on the form in the New Starter Pack. We may require an inhaler to be kept at school. It is necessary for you to complete a form (available in the office) authorising the use of this.

This and lots more information can be found in our School Brochure. Available from the school office. If you require further information about our school please do not hesitate to Contact Us and we will do our best to help.
